Character naming: single names &/or 's
I don't understand the requirement to use 2 names in GW, nor the fact that we can't use an "'s" like "Grenth's whatever", in creating character names.
Not that things will change, now - but, for GW2, maybe they can allow single name names; use of the possessive 's; or even allow people to have the same character name as someone else? While there may be some potential for confusion if 2 people or more all want to use "Soultaker" (cf. Glen Cook's The Black Company series), the system, I am sure, can differentiate between Soultaker attached to [email protected] vs. Soultaker attached to [email protected]. But, that's less important than simply being able to create a single name name, like Soultaker, or Grenth's Scythe, or, heck, even have names that use an ' as a part of the spelling - as well as names where the first letter doesn't haver to be capitalized! It allows for more customization rather than less.
Just my 2-cents wish list...

you can use grenths scythe with out the ', works just the same.
as for 2 people with the same name, pming and reporting ext wouldnt work.
people with sames names shouldnt be allowed.
as for 1 name that wouldnt be bad idea, but with the 2 name system people can have names that are close to each others, if some one wants Grenth, they can both have it with a different first or last name.

Probably just something dumb how their DB is setup. Either that or it was a design choice made early on for whatever reason. I'm sure the devs, the REAL devs, wouldn't have cared, but there was probably a marketing guy involved who was like "well, let's make it like this...".

I was dissapointed when I found I couldn't use a single word name It would be a big improvement to allow it. I also think its silly to use a phrase for a name perhaps that should be disallowed.
As for multiple people with the same name it is good that is not allowed some take pride in their unique name and why help copycats with no imagination.

Other games that didn't have a two name or multiple name system, people begged for last names. This game makes you use them, and the OP wants to get rid of them. Go figure.

I don't think we should be able to put apostrophes in our character names because names aren't supposed to have them. Makes sense to me.
About the one-word name, it's more like a title than anything (e.g, soultaker), and I don't think you should just give yourself a title.

Single names like "Quartz" or "Reno" doesn't belong in my opinion. Two words or more should be only the case.

talk to a friend who play WoW recently, trying to make them play GW lol, anyway, when i told them my GW name, they were very excited and said: wow, you can have 2 names, we've (wow players) been asking for 2 names for a long time)
lol
make it an option in my opinion. other wise players will keep on complaining no matter what you give them.

Is it really worth having "Q U A R T Z" or "X Quartz X" people?
It's not like two name system makes people choose smart names.

I hope really, Anet will learn form their fail of the GW1 Chara Creator and will improve the Naming of Characters as following:
- No Single Names at Character registration, but the player becomes able in the Menu, to click a button, that decides, if other players should be able to see your name, or not.
Example:
i register a Character with the Name XXXXX YYYYYY
at start the option I suggested is deactivated, so all people will see, if they mark my character the name XXXXX YYYYYY.
now I go into the menu, click the button mentioned, activate the feature and from now an, all people who mark my character will see only XXXXX.
- No Prenames, that are shorter, than 3 letters
- No Prenames that consist 2-3 times in a row the same letter and are not longer than 5 letters
- No tripple or longer names through double/multiple spaces > max 1 space for surname
- Insert multilangual accents, meaning making it able to give characters names with ' or the french e's ect. so that people who want to, CAN create real fantasylike looking medieval names, stuff ala
Huor Táralóm
Fëanor Amandil
ect pp. only with such apostrophes and accent letters you can really create names, that sound and especially look fantasy like.
- insert "-"'s ,otherwise no ASCII stuff, like *,/,+, ;, <,>, |,\, [, ], (, ) ect.
Just ensure in GW2, that characters will have all names, that really sound and look like names
just my 2 cents

I kind of like it the way it is. I suppose in some cases, I can sort of see where you might like an apostrophe. But then again, why would you use a possessive in a name?
I do /sign for the idea that we're not forced to have two names, though I doubt I would ever have a character with a single name anyway.

/singed for more freedom in names ... although I tend to 2+ word names and it really annoys me when some games confine me to 1

O'Reily. A lot of people in Britain have come across this problem with databases where surnames are used: non-space (as ' ') don't work in the tables, this is of course due to bad table design where a ' or - causes the next typed word to start in the next field.
/signed for variety, but so long as only actual name punctuation (' and - ) are allowed as well (not . and , or even ) ).

No. NEVER.
We do NOT need symbols such as: "·$%&/()=?¿|@#¬'¡\,.-;:_¨^*´`+[]{} in names.
Every single game I enter in which people can put weird names, they DO use werid names. Too werid, too much.
In most countries, you cannot register your children with weird names. This is THE SAME.
I fact, I would reduce the number of spaces allowed to 4. So no more than 5 words can be used. Names like "S T E P H A N" are an insult to all the rest of the players!!!
Names like "John The Rebelator" are ok.
But I do agree that names should allow tildes, accents and special letters used in some languages, like ñáéíóúýãõäëïöüçбвджяпØ... and so. As long as you set the Windows keyboard language to that certain language, of course.

Let people make up names as they wish. (There was another post somewhere where the person commented on the lack of ability to use the special vowels we don't use in America.) People who want "real world names" that use an apostrophe (O'Toole; O'Reilly), or where part of the name isn't capitalized (du Mornay; al Sin; etc.), should have the ability to do so.
Single names aren't mandatory, btw! But, to have the option, it would be nice!
The quality of the names, on the other hand, is totally subjective and impossible to regulate. (Short of "offensive" names. And even there, ANet sometimes goes overboard to the point of being ridiculous. "Sexy" is offensive? But having Elementalists with huge breasts jiggle them when they dance is okay? Neither is offensive, but seems kind of a gap in reasoning to me... I know, I know - the Ele dance is belly dancing, which is quite cool, actually. But, to stay on point, the degree of "sensitivity" to "objectionable material" seems a bit out of balance if we can have sexy toons, but not use the term "sexy" in the name!)

How many people know how to use those characters on a standard US keyboard? How many on an Asian keyboard? If I wanted to invite one of them to my team, guild, or alliance, I'd need to type that name, and if I don't know how, I'll be unable to invite them. There are too many types of keyboards, and since those characters are not standard on more than a handfull, it would cause too many problems.

I'm pretty happy there's no symbols, otherwise we would see a lot of those annoying leetspeak type names, so prevalent in first person shooters.
